Fukinsei Series - Edition of 6 | Max Ruebensal

Fukinsei 不均整 | Edition of 6

299,00

The Fukinsei (不均整) series consists of 6 collage artworks that were made with a collection of traditional Washi papers on canvas board. The series’ title recalls the traditional design principle Fukinsei (不均整), that is prominently found in Japanese culture and Zen aesthetic.

Fukinsei, at it’s core, illustrates the idea of controlling balance in a composition via irregularity and asymmetry. It celebrates imperfection as part of existence, and states that nature itself is full of beauty and harmonious relationships, that are asymmetrical yet balanced.

On closer inspection, two more staples of Japanese tradition can be found in the series: The individual pieces or ‚shards‘ are made out of traditional Washi Papers, that were collected on my 3400km trip throughout Japan. These traditionally handmade papers are created from fibers inside the inner bark of trees – in a lengthy and labor-intense process that is as old as the 7th century.

They are also connected with golden lines, reminiscent to the art of Kintsugi. Kintsugi (金継ぎ), Japanese for ‘golden joinery’, is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with golden lacquer. This technique is another metaphor for a way of life, embracing your flaws and imperfections.

All works are 50X50 CM, Traditional Washi Paper, Glue and Acrylics on Canvasboard, unframed and signed.
