Based on the song line “Head in the clouds but my gravity is centered” from “Sweater Weather” by the American indie rock band The Neighborhood, the work visualizes the main theme of the song, focusing on the ambivalence in the mind of the protagonist. Torn in indecision between dreams and pessimism, the ‘head in the clouds’ metaphore traditionally depicts the dreamer’s utopian blindness. However, a more realistic view identifies this blindness rather to be situated in the feelings, which is represented in the work by the human heart. In the opposite, the mind, with its thoughts, strives for a rational, set assessment, which it performs with a mentality that has remained ‘on the ground’. It is primarily concerned with the feasibility and the likelihood of fulfilling its dreams and sensitively deals with doubts and other aspects. Face to face, the work clarifies and internalizes the everlasting struggle of the two forces in the human spirit and the insoluble conflict situations in the self-image of the individual. The execution of the heart can further be interpreted as a tribute to René Magritte’s The Future of Statues.
