The composition of the work of art is based on a text line of the song Heartbeat by the American musician and actor Donald Glover (artist name Childish Gambino). It derives from the subjective and free interpretation of the artist. The text line “I got a heart but the artichoke is the only thing girls want when you’re in that smokin ‘light” is purposely taken literally. The metaphor of the artichoke finds multiple analogies in reality: Translated to the changed dating culture and the influence of social media on the creation of a material society defining value society, the artichoke symbolizes a well-known phenomenon: reduced to the exterior one sees only the green leaves – metaphorically for the green, American dollar notes. The vegetable’s status as luxure good in international cuisines reinforces this impression. The inner core of the artichoke, however, is ignored. This continues the parallels between eating and the metaphore: Only after breaking the leaves-tank in a tedious, time-consuming process (mainly by removing the so-called hairs), it reveals the well-deserved reward – the red heart of Artichoke.
